The velocity of circumferential fiber shortening is an alternative method to assess regional function, but this information is not often used clinically and requires off-line analysis. Prolonged ischemia or acute myocardial infarction with successful reperfusion may result in myocardial stunning, whereby a segmental wall motion abnormality can persist for 24–72 hours without irreversible injury. Hibernating myocardium is a persistent wall motion abnormality due to chronic hypoperfusion that is reversed by re-establishing blood flow.
